Drawing on her book Voices: The Story of an Oral Trousseau, Alice Mammola (pictured) joins Ilaria Maninetti, Kristiana Mile and the audience in a conversation about the relationship between folk songs and gender. The encounter explores how the seemingly marginal realms of domestic life and popular song have historically provided many women with a space for expression, resistance and the transmission of a rich oral heritage. The conversation is accompanied by listening sessions, readings and moments of collective singing.

Alice Mammola, also known as La CantaDoira, is a Turin-based singer-songwriter, writer and archivist. Her research brings together folk music, protest songs and oral memory, with a particular focus on women’s voices and the histories of subaltern classes.

Ilaria Maninetti and Kristiana Mile work together on the independent research project By Word of Mouth. Initially conceived as a radio programme, the project has evolved into a broader research platform that takes shape through conversations, listening sessions and other shared formats. At its core is an exploration of how folk music traditions are reinterpreted through contemporary practices, tracing resonances between domestic, oral and ephemeral forms of transmission.

Kristiana Mile (Turin) is a curator and cultural practitioner with a background in multimedia and performing arts. Ilaria Maninetti (Brussels) is a dramaturg and researcher currently completing an MA in Comparative Dramaturgy.
